Helium Hotspot Hosting

What is a Hotspot Host?

Much like cellphone service providers often “rent” space from businesses and individuals to deploy cell-towers, our Hotspot Hosts can earn monthly income in exchange for providing power, internet, and placements for Helium Hotspots. We own and operate the hotspots and pay you a percentage of what the hotspot earns while it is at your location.

What do I need to do?

Not a lot. If you have decently fast internet service and stable electricity, you make a good candidate for a Hotspot Host. There are other factors that determine how a hotspot will perform in a given location and we will work with you to determine your likely earning potential. Since hotspots are in limited supply, not everyone that wants to host will be able to. We prioritize locations to make the best use of our available hardware. The biggest factor is location, but earnings are also impacted by the number and quality of other hotspots in the area.

What makes a good host?

  1. Location
    1. Quality and quantity of nearby hotspots
    2. Surrounding terrain
    3. Elevation
  2. Access to Internet
  3. Access to Power

How will it impact my internet?

Our hotspots use about as much data as streaming a TV show or movie 24-hours per day. In most cases this equates to roughly 30GB per month, but does vary from month-to-month depending on a number of factors. This should be treated as a rough estimate and not a guarantee. If you are on a limited data plan, hosting a hotspot may not be the right thing for you at this time. We would still encourage you to apply if you are interested, as we do have the ability to supply a hotspot with it’s own dedicated LTE-backed internet connections.

How will it impact my power bill?

Our hotspot deployments use about as much power as a single incandescent light-bulb. In most cases this amount of usage is negligible and is more than offset by the monthly earnings (see below).

How much will I earn?

There are many factors that contribute to the profitability of any given hotspot and each deployment is unique. Beyond just location (as discussed above), there are dynamic market forces at play that vary based on network utilization, supply, and demand. On average, our Hotspot Hosts are earning roughly $75-$100 per month. The network is still in it’s early stages and it is not totally clear how this will change over time.
